That is to say, the Montréal I thought I would be living in. The rest of it is becoming an English town, and it’s a place where English thrives best out of any city presently within a united Canada, as some suggest.

It’s true. I know it because I’m making it worse.

For me, the trip to French Montréal was a very special experience, because I spend most of my time in English Montréal – downtown and a bit to the north where I study in a French school (or rather, I use their library and leave ASAP because of the coldness I feel whenever I’m there – and not just because they are cheaping out on the heat) or I work around the same neighbourhood and greet all the anglos who all seem so disgruntled when I do so with only a “bonjour!”.

At work, it’s usually the Americans who answer back with a gusto-filled “Bonjour!”, as if it were this special and amusing thing to say bonjour. Then, sometimes, they’ll do the sort of apology for not really speaking French, I hope you don’t mind. The giveaway is when I see the gift card printed in English only or the American quarters. “Oh, are you American?” I ask.

The others – whom I imagine for the most part to be Canadians on vacation, McGill students with their obligatory McGill sweater, backpack, thermos, pencil case, shoelaces etc, and militant anglophilic immigrants – the others respond with a short, pointed HI. Another expression of Canadian tolerance, surely.

But to actively try to learn French in Montréal, as a young Anglophone, is a challenge that goes on seemingly without reward. Doing so, you bother just about everyone around you. Especially francophones, half of which seem to want to speak to you in English only, to get practice, getting in some free classes without having to actually go anywhere, and showing off how cosmopolitan they are; and the other half who seem to want nothing to do with someone trying to learn the language – someone who mixes up a word or two or says a funny adverb. Maybe they’ll say “bonjour” once in a while to be polite (but probably not unless you do) or ask you for your notes. But do they invite you to their parties and nights out at Café Campus?

For the young French-language student, the message becomes clear : not worth the trouble! Why try to do something when everyone’s fighting against you? When you feel lucky for even having found a friend in your new, frostbitten foreign home, are you going to snub her just because she speaks your language?

And among other anglos, when you try to speak French, the reaction is “Why are you doing that? Why are you being weird?” I know a girl who went to all the English universities in Montréal for various degrees and now works for some activists or other downtown. She still has problems ordering off a French menu. No need for French, apparently! So quit being weird and be tolerant!

It’s my fault. I should have chosen to live in a less-anglo neighbourhood. I should have spent more time in my books, transcribing the adventures of Sophie-Anne and Mélanie in their new apartment, putting the right male-objectifying form of the verb in the little spaces. But I did enough of that at home. The idea was to move onto native speakers who didn’t exist where I come from. It seems that to surround oneself with the language you’ve got to move to Trois-Rivières (if you want to be stuck owning a car – since I’m not stuck in the 1960s, I don’t, hence Montréal), or just go to Paris already.

I was thinking that in going to a French school, things would be different. But it was the same dichotomy I outlined above. Either I was the Discount English Teacher or some kind of foreign jerk-idiot, who was prima facie set against Québec and its language and all it stood for, or too “macho” or who knows why I was so objectionable.

Well, yes, that was the plan!

Oh yes, learning French in Montréal – hitting your head against a wall every single day.

Happily, I haven’t given up, full of resentment. I still write on this website in French (with the occasional exception — JUST FOR YOU!). This site has become the questioning of a new Montréality that takes into account the necessary status of the French language – unlike certain websites listed in my own “links” section. My last chance at communicating with the francophone community. It’s because of these very experiences that I realize the question is much more complex than the rather simplistic response asserting that “those people should learn French!”. Oh, sure. Just like that.

If we already risk not giving a damn about French, I imagine experiences like the ones I’ve described would make any given first-world spoiled brat rather pissed off about the whole affair – with the disappointment adding bitterness to the rejection.

A charm offensive seems a much better approach. If you want immigrants to integrate into French, without bringing along a hidden motive to help destroy it later on, integrate them yourselves! I remember seeing how the OQLF website recommended being a “frenchifying person” (sorry, that’s my best off-the-cuff translation), by rather rudely and tactlessly imposing French on foreigners. Instead you should invite them over, ask them if they need help with their French, speak to them slowly (and well!). Help valorize French as a welcoming place where interesting things happen – for you and for them as well!

If it remains a mere question of compliance with legislation, interpersonal warfare, the coldness between peoples – francophones risk losing the moral battle. Because the deck is already stacked against them – losing or winning the moral battle may be what determines the outcome of whole war for the preservation of French in North America.

And so I was thinking as my journey to the east side of Montréal began….

C’est-à-dire, le Montréal où j’imaginais j’allais habiter. Car le reste de Montréal est en train de s’angliciser, et c’est une place où l’anglais est, il semble, plus vivant que dans n’importe quelle autre grande ville canadienne comme certains soulignent.

C’est vrai, tout ça. Je le sais bien. Parce que moi, je fais partie de cette tendance.

Pour moi, il s’agissait d’une expérience spéciale, ce voyage à l’est de Montréal, car je passe la plupart de son temps au centre-ville où j’habite ou plus au nord, où j’étudie à une institution francophone (où plutôt, j’utilise les services de bibliothèque et je quitte aussitôt que possible – à cause de la froideur que je ressens quand je suis là) ou je travaille dans le même coin, en accueillant les clients anglophones qui semblent être offusqués quand je leur accueille avec seulement un «bonjour» !

Au travail, ce sont les américains qui répondent « Bonjour! » avec gusto, comme quelle idée spéciale et amusante, ce bonjour! Ensuite vient peut-être l’apologie – « uh, I don’t actually speak french… » Puis elle me donne une carte-cadeau unilingue ou une pièce de 25 sous qui la trahit. « Oh, are you American? »

Les autres – j’imagine pour le plupart les canadiens en vacances, les étudiants de McGill (avec pull rouge obligatoire) et immigrants anglophiles militants — répondent plutôt avec un « HI» court et pointu. La tolérance?

Mais essayer activement d’apprendre le français en Montréal, en tant que jeune anglophone, c’est un défi qui se passe presque sans récompense. Ainsi on dérange tout le monde autour de nous. Surtout les francophones, dont une moitié, il semble, veulent juste te parler en anglais, afin de pratiquer, peut-être recevoir des cours d’anglais gratuits sans devoir déménager nulle part, ou se vanter de leur tolérance; et l’autre moitié qui veulent rien à voir avec un anglophone ou autre personne toujours tentant d’apprendre le français. Une personne qui mélange quelques mots ou qui utilise un adverbe bizarre. Peut-être ils disent bonjour afin d’être polis. Mais est-ce qu’ils t’invitent à leurs fêtes? Leurs soirées au Café Campus?

Pour le jeune étudiant de français, le message devient clair : ça vaut pas la peine! Pourquoi essayer de faire quelque chose quand tout le monde lutte contre tes efforts? Quand tu te sens chanceux d’avoir rencontré une amie dans ce nouveau pays étranger et froid, pourquoi tu vas la laisser tomber à cause du seul fait qu’elle parle la même langue que toi?

Et pour les autres anglophones, quand tu essaies avec le français, la question devient « pourquoi tu fais ça? » Why are you being weird? J’en connais une qui avait fait la tour des universités anglophones à Montréal et travaille présentement en anglais pour une organisation activiste ou autre – et elle a toujours du mal à commander une poutine d’un menu français. Pas besoin du français, évidemment! Alors quit being weird, be tolerant!

C’est ma faute. J’aurai pu choisir un quartier moins anglicisé. J’aurais dû passer plus de temps dans les livres, réécrivant les aventures de Sophie-Anne et Mélanie dans leur nouvel appart en mettant la bonne forme du verbe dans l’espace. Mais je faisais ça amplement dans mon pays natal. Et je voulais passer aux gens de langue maternelle qui n’existaient pas là-bas. Enfin il semble qu’il faut que j’aille à Trois-Rivières, si j’accepte de devoir m’acheter une voiture, ce que je voulais éviter en déménageant dans une ville dite grande, où à Paris – si tu veux être entouré par le français.

Je pensais qu’en allant étudier à une institution francophone les choses allaient être différents. Mais c’était la même dichotomie j’exposais en haut. Soit j’étais le prof d’anglais à rabais, soit un con, étranger bizarre qui était prima facie contre le Québec et sa langue, soit trop macho, ou dieu sait en quoi j’étais si insupportable.

Apprendre le français à Montréal, c’est se battre contre tous ces jeux chaque jour.

Heureusement, je n’ai pas lâché, rempli de ressentiment. Je continue à écrire sur ce blogue, qui devient le questionnement d’un nouvelle montréalité qui tient compte du fait français – à l’encontre d’un certain blogue qui est nommé dans ma section « liens ». IL s’agit de ma dernière chance de communication avec la communauté francophone. C’est à cause de ces expériences que je me rends compte que la question s’avère beaucoup plus complexe que la réaction plutôt ignorante où l’insiste que « ils devraient apprendre le français, eux!». Ah, oui. Juste comme ça.

Si on risque de l’emblée de s’en foutre de votre français, j’imagine que les expériences telles comme j’ai décrites rendraient le pourri-gâté-jeune-du-premier-monde typique plutôt fâché, non seulement de sa déception mais de la colère instinctif du rejet.

Alors il semble qu’un offensif de charme soit nécessaire – si vous voulez que les immigrants s’intègrent au français sans un motif caché pour le détruire ensuite, intégrer-les vous-mêmes! Je me rappelle avoir vu comment le site web de l’OQLF conseille d’être une « personne francisiante » en imposant brusquement le français sur les étrangers. Invitent-les plutôt chez vous, demandez s’ils ont besoin d’aide avec leur français, parlez lentement et bien. Aidez à valoriser le français comme une place accueillant, où les choses intéressantes se passent, pour vous aussi bien que pour eux.

S’il reste une question de législation, de guerre interpersonnelle, la froideur entre peuples, les francophones risquent bien de perdre la guerre morale. Et, puisque les cartes sont tirées à leur encontre, c’est ce qui risque d’être la cause de la perte du combat pour la survie de la langue.

C’est ainsi que je pensais quand mon voyage vers l’est de Montréal commençait ….

Here is Avenue du Parc in Montréal, which Google has decided to rename “Park Avenue”, which is not its official name. The excuse that francophone toponyms should be rendered in English within an English document or computer don’t really fly: we can see elsewhere in the city (to say nothing of Paris) that the “rues” are really rues — that is, the generic is in French as well as the specific. Elsewhere, one sees that Points of Interest in Montréal, the invading brown concentric squares, are often written in English only, a worrying trend.

Though Google seems thus far more respectful than Microsoft with its Bing, because the Québec streetscape is mostly accurately represented in French on Google Maps, these problems remain to be corrected in order to respect the linguistic situation in Québec. So I encourage you all to report the problem using the link at the bottom of the page on Google Maps — the least we can do for cultural diversity.

Voici l’avenue du Parc à Montréal renommé par Google en « Park Avenue », qui n’est pas du tout son nom officiel. L’excuse que les toponymes francophones doivent être traduits dans un document ou sur un ordinateur anglophone ne marchent pas : on voit clairement qu’ailleurs dans la ville (et à Paris) les rues sont bien des « rues » — c’est à dire, les génériques sont en français aussi bien que les spécifiques. On voit d’ailleurs que les lieux d’intérêt à Montréal sont souvent décrits en anglais seulement, une tendance inquiètante.

Bien que Google semble plus respectueux que Microsoft avec son Bing parce que les rues au Québec sur Cartes Google semblent être en français, il reste ces failles à corriger afin de respecter la situation linguistique au Québec. Je vous encourage donc à signaler ces erreurs à Google par moyen du lien en bas des cartes.
